Soostruktuuride refers to the study and classification of structures found within peatlands, also known as bogs or mires. These structures are a result of the unique hydrological and biological processes that characterize these waterlogged environments. Peatlands accumulate partially decayed organic matter due to anaerobic conditions, which slow decomposition. This accumulated material, known as peat, forms distinct layers and formations that can be considered soostruktuuride.

These structures can range in scale from microscopic arrangements of plant remains to larger, macroscopic features. Microscopic soostruktuuride might include the cellular structure of Sphagnum moss, the dominant peat-forming plant in many temperate bogs, or the partially decomposed root systems of other bog vegetation. Macroscopic structures include phenomena like hummocks, which are raised mounds of peat often dominated by Sphagnum, and hollows, which are depressions that may fill with water, forming small pools or flarks.

Other important soostruktuuride can include fen hummocks, which are typically less acidic than bog hummocks and may support different vegetation. Ridges and pools, a patterned arrangement of alternating raised dry areas and water-filled channels, are characteristic of certain types of peatlands, particularly ombrotrophic (rain-fed) bogs. The study of soostruktuuride is crucial for understanding peatland ecology, hydrology, and the role these ecosystems play in carbon cycling and biogeochemical processes. It also informs peatland restoration efforts and the assessment of their conservation status.
