somycetes
Somycetes is a term that can refer to several different biological concepts, often related to fungi or fungal-like organisms. The most common usage refers to a class within the kingdom Fungi, specifically the Oomycetes. Oomycetes, despite their name and some superficial resemblance to fungi, are now understood to be distinct organisms, often classified as stramenopiles, more closely related to brown algae than true fungi. They are characterized by coenocytic hyphae (multinucleate threads without cross-walls) and produce motile zoospores with two dissimilar flagella. Many oomycetes are aquatic or live in damp soil environments, and some are significant plant pathogens, causing diseases like late blight of potato and downy mildew of grapes.
In some older or less precise classifications, "somycetes" might have been used more broadly to encompass organisms
