Sommarstuga, literally a "summer cottage" in Swedish, refers to a small holiday dwelling used by families during the Swedish summer. Typically located in rural areas near lakes, forests or coastlines, the sommarstuga serves as a retreat from city life and a base for outdoor recreation.

Most sommarstugor are wooden and modest in size, often one or two stories with simple interiors that include a kitchen, living space and a few bedrooms. Exteriors are commonly painted faluröd (red) or yellow, and many sites include a garden, a dock, or a nearby beach. Historically they had limited amenities, but modern versions often have electricity, indoor plumbing and insulation.

Originally gaining popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with increased rail travel, the tradition expanded through the mid-20th century as urban families bought or built seasonal homes. Today the sommarstuga remains a cultural symbol of Swedish family life and outdoor leisure, with activities such as swimming, boating, berry picking and midsummer gatherings central to the experience.

Ownership is private and can be passed down within families or sold. Regulations on construction, renovation and taxation vary by municipality. While some households use their sommarstuga year-round, many keep it as a seasonal retreat, balancing preservation of traditional character with modern amenities.
