Soluväliä is a Finnish term commonly used to refer to intercellular spaces, the regions between adjacent cells in multicellular organisms. These spaces contain interstitial fluid and components of the extracellular matrix (ECM) such as collagen, elastin and proteoglycans in animals, or air and cell wall material in plant tissues. Soluväliä contribute to the physical separation of cells while permitting molecular and cellular interactions.

Functionally, soluväliä enable passive diffusion of gases, nutrients and metabolic waste, facilitate paracrine and autocrine signaling, and provide a medium for immune cell migration. The ECM within these spaces also transmits mechanical forces and helps regulate cell adhesion, migration and differentiation. In plants, intercellular air spaces support gas exchange and influence tissue porosity; transport between cells additionally occurs via symplastic routes through plasmodesmata.

Changes in soluväliä are relevant in health and disease. Excess fluid accumulation in intercellular spaces causes edema, while pathological remodeling of the ECM can lead to fibrosis and altered tissue stiffness. Tumor progression and inflammation often involve modifications of the intercellular environment that affect cell behavior and treatment response.

Study of soluväliä employs histology, electron and confocal microscopy, tracer diffusion assays and biochemical analysis of ECM components. Understanding these spaces is important for describing tissue organization, transport phenomena and cellular microenvironments across animal and plant biology.
