Historically, solariums evolved from glass conservatories and winter gardens of the 19th century, built to house exotic plants and provide a warm retreat. In some contexts, the term solarium also refers to tanning beds or spa booths that emit ultraviolet radiation. These devices are regulated in many countries due to health risks, with age restrictions and safety warnings.
