Socialism can also be distinguished by its approach to the role of the state, ranging from state ownership of the means of production (state socialism) to a minimal role for the state (libertarian socialism).

However, the effectiveness and desirability of socialism are subjects of ongoing debate among economists, political scientists, and philosophers. Critics argue that socialism often leads to inefficiency and lack of innovation, while proponents maintain that it promotes social justice and equality.
