Soakoff, often written as soak-off or soak-off removal, refers to a method used in nail care to remove gel nail polishes, gel extensions, or acrylic overlays by soaking the nail plate in solvent, typically acetone. The term is widely used in professional salons and among enthusiasts to distinguish this gentle removal from filing or scrapping away existing product.

The removal relies on solvent penetration to dissolve the polymer-based coating. A common technique involves lightly buffing the top layer to break the seal, then wrapping each nail with acetone-moistened cotton and securing it with foil or a soak-off cap. After a set period, usually 10 to 15 minutes, the softened product can be gently pried or lifted away with a wooden or plastic tool. Residual residue can be wiped away, and the natural nail is often buffed lightly to remove any remaining film.

Variations exist depending on the product type. Some gel systems require longer soaking times or the use of non-acetone products for removal, though acetone remains the most effective solvent for many gel and acrylic systems. For safety and nail health, care is advised to minimize skin contact and drying, including using gloves when appropriate and applying emollients or cuticle oil after removal.
