A snöstorm is a winter weather event in which large amounts of snow fall over a relatively short period, often accompanied by strong winds that create blowing and drifting snow. Snowstorms can reduce visibility to near zero and make travel hazardous. They vary in intensity and duration, from several hours to several days, and may be followed by periods of continued light snow or lake-effect snow in some regions.

Meteorologically, snowstorms form when moist air is lifted over a low-pressure system or frontal boundary, causing precipitation to fall as snow when surface temperatures are near or below freezing. Snowfall amounts depend on precipitation rate, air temperature, and wind. Winds can cause blizzard-like conditions even if snowfall is not extreme. Wind chill and drifting snow amplify exposure hazards.

Impacts include disruptions to road, rail, and air travel; school and business closures; and potential power outages from heavy snow loading or ice. Accidents, hypothermia, and frostbite risk increase during prolonged exposure. Preparedness typically involves staying indoors, stocking essentials, and ensuring vehicles are equipped for winter driving.

Geographically, snowstorms occur in the Northern Hemisphere during winter in North America, Europe, and Asia. They are common in inland regions and along coastlines where moist air meets cold air. Forecasting relies on weather radar, satellite data, surface observations, and computer models to predict snowfall, wind, and potential blizzard conditions.
