Småskredbildning refers to the process of small-scale landslides occurring in soil. These events are typically characterized by rapid movement of a relatively small volume of earth material down a slope. The triggers for småskred can be varied, often involving an increase in pore water pressure within the soil mass. This increase can be caused by heavy rainfall, rapid snowmelt, or changes in groundwater levels.

The physical characteristics of the soil also play a significant role. Soils with low shear strength, such as silts and some clays, are more susceptible to småskred. The slope angle is another critical factor; steeper slopes are inherently less stable. Vegetation cover can sometimes help to stabilize slopes by binding the soil particles together with roots, so a lack of vegetation can increase the risk.
