Smärtfritt is a Swedish term describing the state or goal of being without pain. In medical contexts it is used to refer to procedures or treatments designed to minimize or prevent pain for the patient. The term is often used in patient communications, care planning, and evaluations of pain management strategies.

Applications include dentistry, surgical procedures, obstetrics, and chronic pain management. In dentistry, for example, smärtfritt treatment may involve local anesthesia, sedation, or analgesic protocols; in surgery, anesthesia and multimodal analgesia aim to minimize postoperative pain; in obstetrics, analgesia and anesthetic options seek to support a smärtfri or low-pain birth experience where appropriate.

Strategies to achieve smärtfritt combine pharmacological methods—local anesthetics, regional blocks, general anesthesia, and non-opioid or opioid analgesics—with nonpharmacological approaches such as cognitive behavioral techniques, distraction, hypnosis, and patient education. Technological advances include minimally invasive techniques, improved anesthesia protocols, nerve blocks, and adjuncts like topical anesthetics and virtual reality for pain modulation.

However, complete pain elimination is not always possible or desirable. Pain serves as a warning signal, and overly aggressive pain suppression can carry risks or affect recovery. Equity in access to effective pain relief and responsible use of analgesics, including opioids, are important ethical considerations.

Pain assessment tools, such as numeric rating scales or visual analog scales, help quantify smärtfritt outcomes and guide treatment adjustments. Patient-reported outcomes and satisfaction are also used to evaluate success in achieving a pain-minimized state.
