Smyslov is a Russian-language surname. The most prominent bearer is Vasily Vasilievich Smyslov (1921–2010), a Soviet and Russian chess grandmaster and World Chess Champion. Smyslov was among the leading players of the mid-20th century, and he helped establish the Soviet school of chess as a dominant force in international competition. He received the title of Grandmaster in 1950, in the inaugural year of FIDE’s official titles.
