Slobbering, also known as drooling or excessive salivation, is the unintentional leakage of saliva from the mouth. Saliva is a fluid produced by the salivary glands that plays a crucial role in digestion, lubrication of the mouth, and oral hygiene.

The amount of saliva produced varies between individuals and can be influenced by factors such as food intake, emotions, and certain medical conditions. When saliva production exceeds the capacity of the mouth to retain it, slobbering can occur. This can happen when a person is unable to properly swallow or manage saliva, or when there is an overproduction of saliva.

In infants and young children, slobbering is a normal developmental stage as they learn to control their swallowing reflexes. It is often associated with teething. In adults, slobbering can be a symptom of various underlying issues. These can include neurological conditions affecting muscle control, such as Parkinson's disease or stroke, or conditions affecting the mouth and throat, like infections or anatomical abnormalities. Certain medications can also increase saliva production.

Management of slobbering depends on its cause. For infants, it typically resolves with age. For adults, treatment strategies may involve addressing the underlying medical condition, behavioral therapies to improve swallowing techniques, or medications to reduce saliva production. In some cases, assistive devices may be used to manage the condition.
