Skydshett is a term occasionally used in Swedish-language contexts to refer to protective headgear designed to shield the wearer from impacts, penetration, and certain environmental hazards. In formal safety literature the more common term is skyddshjälm or säkerhetshjälm, and skj protection is more often described through standard helmet terminology rather than a distinct word.

Design and features

A protective hat or helmet typically consists of a hard outer shell, an energy-absorbing liner, and a suspension or headband that holds the shell above the head. A chin strap secures the device, and many models include ventilation channels for comfort. Some versions integrate additional components such as face shields, earmuffs, or visors. Materials commonly used include high-density polyethylene (HDPE), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), or composites, chosen for impact resistance and lightness. The fit and retention system are designed to distribute impact forces and prevent the helmet from shifting during movement.

Standards and certification

Protective headgear is governed by regional standards that specify performance criteria and testing procedures. In Europe, helmets for industrial use typically conform to EN 397, which covers impact resistance, carve-out requirements, and other durability aspects. In the United States, ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 outlines classifications for impact protection and electrical insulation (e.g., Class E, Class G, Class C). For electrical environments, additional standards such as EN 50365 may apply. Organizations often require helmets to bear certification marks indicating conformity.

Use and maintenance

Helmets are used across construction, mining, forestry, and various industrial settings. They should be chosen based on hazard assessment, correctly sized, and worn with the chin strap fastened. Regular inspection for cracks, deformation, and strap wear is essential; helmets should be replaced after significant impact, if damaged, or after the end of their service life as indicated by the manufacturer.
