Skiveslitasje is a term used to describe the gradual loss of material or degradation of the surface of a disc from use. It encompasses wear on different types of disc media, including vinyl records, optical discs such as CDs and DVDs, and magnetic storage discs. The common element is surface degradation that can affect performance, data integrity, or audio quality over time.

In vinyl records, slitasje occurs when a stylus repeatedly contacts the groove, causing friction that can widen the groove and introduce distortion. Factors such as playback pressure, tracking force, stylus shape, and debris on the record influence the rate of wear. Excessive wear leads to poorer sound quality and diminished fidelity, and worn grooves can cause skipping or loop playback.

For optical discs, surface wear is primarily the result of scratches, fingerprints, and other damage to the lacquer or polycarbonate surface. Although reading is largely non-contact, a damaged surface can reflect or scatter the laser light, producing read errors or data loss. Proper cleaning, safe handling, and storage in jewel cases or sleeves reduce wear on optical media.

In magnetic storage, skiveslitasje can refer to wear at the head-disk interface, where repeated contact or sliding friction can degrade the read/write surface and shorten device life. Modern drives use precise bearing surfaces and air gaps to minimize contact, but physical wear remains a concern in older or heavily stressed systems.

Prevention focuses on careful handling, appropriate storage and cleaning, using correctly calibrated playback equipment, and timely replacement of worn components (such as styluses) or damaged discs. Monitoring signs include increased noise, distortion, read errors, or data corruption, which indicate emerging wear.
