Skeletttumörerna refers to tumors that originate in or affect the bones of the skeletal system. These growths can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign bone tumors are more common and typically grow slowly, rarely spreading to other parts of the body. They may cause localized pain or a palpable lump. Examples include osteochondromas, enchondromas, and giant cell tumors.

Malignant bone tumors, also known as bone cancer, are less common but more serious. They can arise directly from bone tissue (primary bone cancer) or spread from cancer elsewhere in the body (secondary or metastatic bone cancer). Primary bone cancers include osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and Ewing sarcoma. Metastatic bone cancer is significantly more frequent than primary bone cancer, with common primary sites including the breast, prostate, lung, kidney, and thyroid.

Symptoms of bone tumors can vary but often include persistent bone pain, swelling or a lump near the affected bone, unexplained fractures (pathological fractures), and fatigue or weight loss, especially in cases of malignant tumors. Diagnosis usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and bone scans, and a biopsy to determine the exact type of tumor. Treatment depends on whether the tumor is benign or malignant, its size, location, and whether it has spread. Benign tumors may require observation or surgical removal if they cause symptoms or are at risk of fracture. Malignant tumors often require a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapies. Early detection and appropriate treatment are crucial for managing bone tumors effectively.
