Skarlátaságot is the Hungarian term for scarlet fever, a bacterial illness primarily affecting children. It is caused by certain strains of the Streptococcus pyogenes bacterium, also known as Group A Streptococcus. This bacterium produces a toxin that leads to the characteristic rash of the illness. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets, typically from coughing or sneezing, making it highly contagious in group settings like schools and daycare centers.

The incubation period for scarlet fever usually ranges from two to five days. Initial symptoms can mimic those of strep throat, including a sore throat, fever, headache, and sometimes vomiting. A distinctive feature is the development of a red, sandpaper-like rash that often begins on the neck and chest and then spreads to the rest of the body, sparing the palms and soles. The tongue may also develop a "strawberry" appearance, initially white and then turning red.

Diagnosis is usually made based on clinical presentation and a throat swab to confirm the presence of Streptococcus pyogenes. Scarlet fever is treated with antibiotics, typically penicillin or amoxicillin, which effectively clear the infection and prevent complications. Prompt treatment is important to reduce the risk of developing more serious conditions such as rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation. While scarlet fever was once a more severe childhood illness, widespread antibiotic use has made it much more manageable.
