Scalability refers to the ability of a system, network, or process to handle a growing amount of work, or its potential to be enlarged to accommodate that growth. There are two main types of scalability: vertical scalability and horizontal scalability.

Vertical scalability, also known as scaling up, involves increasing the capacity of existing resources. This can mean adding more processing power, memory, or storage to a single server. While effective up to a certain point, vertical scalability eventually hits physical limits and can be more expensive.

Horizontal scalability, or scaling out, involves adding more machines or nodes to a system. This distributes the workload across multiple resources, making the system more resilient and generally more cost-effective for large-scale growth. Cloud computing platforms heavily rely on horizontal scalability.
