Skaleids are a class of fictional shapeshifting beings that feature in fantasy and speculative fiction. They are characterized by a connection to scales—figurative or literal—and the ability to navigate multiple scales of reality. They are not based on real-world organisms, and their traits vary across works.

The term skaleid is a neologism created in modern fantasy literature, drawing on the word scale and the suffix -eid, echoing terms like eidolon. In most settings, skaleids inhabit situations involving layered spaces, from microcosms to macrocosms, and are described as guardians, tricksters, or mediators between scales.

Skaleids can alter their morphology, size, or texture, often without obvious constraints. They may project armor from scales, rearrange materials at different scales, and perceive events at multiple levels simultaneously. Some accounts define a unique "scale sense" enabling recognition of thresholds between realms.

They tend to be reclusive and long-lived. They are typically associated with scale-locked loci such as stair-step cities, cliff faces, or fractal landscapes. Interactions with humans range from guiding travelers through difficult thresholds to deceiving or testing them.

In games, novels, and multimedia, skaleids serve as key plot agents or worldbuilding devices to explore themes of size, perception, and authority. Visual portrayals emphasize iridescent skin, shifting contours, or plate-like scales.
