The genre emerged in the late 1980s and gained momentum in the 1990s during the third wave of ska, particularly in North America and parts of Europe. It draws on early 2 Tone ska and the energy of hardcore, combining ska rhythms with punk aggression and, at times, reggae or dancehall influences.

Origins and development: In the United States, bands began merging ska with fast punk in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones helped popularize ska-core through touring and albums, while others such as Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, and Goldfinger exemplified the mid- to late-1990s ska-punk fusion that is often labeled ska-core by fans. In the UK and Europe, ska-infused punk scenes also contributed to the sound, sometimes blending ska with skate punk and melodic hardcore.

Characteristics: Typical instrumentation includes guitars, bass, drums, and a horn section on many tracks. Songs often switch between ska-style upstrokes and punk-style aggressive sections.
