The construction of a skøytebane involves preparing a flat, level surface, often a concrete slab, which is then flooded with water. The water freezes to create the ice. For indoor rinks, a system of pipes carrying a refrigerant is embedded within or beneath the concrete, chilling it to below freezing point, which then freezes the water layer on top. Regular maintenance, such as ice resurfacing with a Zamboni or similar machine, is crucial to keep the surface smooth and safe for skating.
