Sjónhimnuafn is a term used in Icelandic medicine to describe a detached retina. The retina is a light-sensitive layer of tissue lining the back of the eye. When this tissue separates from its underlying layers, it is referred to as sjónhimnuafn. This condition can lead to a loss of vision if not treated promptly.

The detachment can occur in different ways. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, the most common type, happens when a tear or hole develops in the retina, allowing fluid to seep underneath and lift it away. Exudative or secondary retinal detachment can be caused by other medical conditions that lead to fluid buildup behind the retina, without a tear being present. Tractional retinal detachment occurs when scar tissue on the surface of the retina pulls it away from its normal position.

Symptoms of sjónhimnuafn can include sudden flashes of light, an increase in the number of floaters (small specks or lines that drift in the field of vision), or a shadow or curtain obscuring part of the vision. These symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional immediately. Diagnosis typically involves an eye examination, including dilation of the pupil to view the retina.

Treatment for sjónhimnuafn depends on the type and severity of the detachment. Surgical intervention is often necessary to reattach the retina. Procedures like laser photocoagulation, cryopexy, pneumatic retinopexy, or vitrectomy are common surgical approaches. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to preserving vision and preventing permanent vision loss.
