Sizmografë, also known as seismometers, are scientific instruments used to detect and measure seismic waves, which are vibrations that travel through the Earth. These waves are typically generated by earthquakes, but can also be caused by volcanic eruptions, large landslides, explosions, and even man-made sources like construction or underground nuclear tests. The primary function of a seismograph is to record the motion of the ground.

A basic seismograph consists of a mass that is suspended in a way that it remains relatively stationary while the Earth moves around it. This suspension is usually achieved using springs or by allowing the mass to hang freely. When seismic waves pass, the ground moves, but the suspended mass tends to stay put due to inertia. The difference in motion between the stationary mass and the moving ground is then recorded. Early seismographs used a pen attached to the suspended mass to draw a wavy line on a rotating drum of paper, creating a seismogram.

Modern seismographs are highly sophisticated electronic devices. They use sensors like accelerometers or velocity meters to detect ground motion. These sensors convert the mechanical energy of the seismic waves into electrical signals, which are then amplified, processed, and digitally recorded. The resulting data, the seismogram, provides valuable information about the location, magnitude, and depth of seismic events. Seismographs are essential tools for earthquake research, hazard assessment, and for understanding the internal structure of the Earth. They are deployed in networks around the world to monitor seismic activity continuously.
