Sivuversoja, or lateral shoots, are secondary shoots that emerge from the axils of leaves or from the sides of the main stem in many plants. They contribute to branching and foliage architecture in both herbaceous and woody species.

Lateral shoot formation is influenced by apical dominance. The growing tip produces auxins that suppress axillary bud outgrowth; removing or pruning the apical meristem releases these buds, allowing lateral shoots to develop. Light, nutrients, and pruning practices also modulate growth.

In horticulture, sivuversoja are managed to control plant form and resource allocation. Pruning or pinching are common methods to limit growth or guide shoots for training. In fruit crops, removing excessive side shoots can improve light penetration and fruit quality, while preserving selected shoots supports future productivity.

There is variation among species. Some plants naturally produce more prominent side shoots; tomatoes and grapevines are often trained with regulated lateral growth, whereas many shrubs are kept compact by selective removal.

Unmanaged side shoots can drain energy, reduce yield on the main stem, or increase disease risk due to crowded canopies. Proper management depends on the species, cultivation goals, and environmental conditions.
