Sisophonids are a group of extinct marine reptiles belonging to the order Sauropterygia, which also includes plesiosaurs and nothosaurs. They are notable for their unique anatomical features and evolutionary significance within the broader context of early sauropterygians. Sisophonids are primarily known from fossils discovered in the Late Triassic period, dating roughly from 228 to 201 million years ago, during which they inhabited shallow marine environments.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of sisophonids is their elongated necks and relatively small heads, which set them apart from other contemporaneous sauropterygians. Their skulls often exhibit specialized adaptations, such as elongated snouts or tooth modifications, suggesting a diverse range of feeding strategies. Some species possessed sharp, conical teeth, while others had flatter, crushing teeth, indicating potential dietary specialization, such as feeding on fish, mollusks, or other marine invertebrates.

Notable examples include *Sisophon* and *Pachypterygius*, though the latter is sometimes classified separately due to its more derived features. Their evolutionary position remains a subject of study, as sisophonids appear to represent a transitional form between earlier nothosaurs and later, more derived plesiosaurs.
