Silmätökköön is a Finnish term that translates to "eye mite" or "eyelash mite." It refers to microscopic arachnids, specifically Demodex mites, that commonly live in the hair follicles and oil glands of human skin, particularly on the face. The two most common species found on humans are Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis.

These mites are a normal part of the human microbiome and are found on the vast majority of people, often without causing any symptoms. They feed on dead skin cells and sebum, an oily substance produced by the skin's glands. Generally, they are harmless and their presence goes unnoticed.

However, in some individuals, an overpopulation of Demodex mites can lead to a condition known as demodicosis. This can manifest as itching, redness, inflammation, and irritation of the skin, particularly around the eyelids and eyelashes. Conditions like blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) and rosacea can sometimes be exacerbated or even caused by an excessive number of these mites.

Diagnosis typically involves a skin scraping or eyelash epilation to examine for the presence of mites under a microscope. Treatment, if necessary, usually involves topical medications such as ivermectin or metronidazole, or medicated shampoos and cleansers to reduce the mite population. Good facial hygiene is also recommended.
