Silmäsärky, known scientifically as orbital pain or supraorbital neuralgia, refers to discomfort or pain felt around the eye. This can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing sensation. The pain can be localized to one eye or affect both. It is a common symptom that can be caused by a variety of underlying issues.

One of the most frequent causes of silmäsärky is eye strain, often resulting from prolonged visual tasks such as reading, computer work, or driving. Insufficient sleep or dehydration can also contribute to eye strain and subsequent pain. Migraines and tension headaches are also strongly associated with silmäsärky, with the pain often radiating around the eye.

Other potential causes include sinus infections, where inflammation in the sinuses can press on nerves connected to the eye area. Allergies can also lead to irritation and inflammation, causing discomfort. More serious, though less common, causes include infections of the eye itself, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or keratitis, or conditions affecting the optic nerve. Trauma to the head or eye can also result in pain.

Diagnosis of silmäsärky typically involves a review of symptoms, medical history, and a physical examination, which may include an eye exam. Depending on the suspected cause, further investigations like sinus imaging or neurological assessments might be recommended. Treatment strategies vary widely and depend on the identified cause, ranging from simple rest and over-the-counter pain relievers for eye strain to antibiotics for infections or specific medications for migraines.
