Silmälinssejä, known in English as contact lenses, are thin, curved lenses worn directly on the surface of the eye to correct vision. They are an alternative to eyeglasses and are used to treat refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia. Contact lenses work by altering the way light enters the eye, focusing it more precisely on the retina.

There are several types of contact lenses available. Soft contact lenses are the most common and are made of flexible plastic materials that contain water. They are generally comfortable and easy to adapt to. Hard contact lenses, also known as rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses, are less common but offer sharper vision for some individuals, especially those with significant astigmatism or certain corneal conditions. Daily disposable lenses are worn for a single day and then discarded, offering convenience and a reduced risk of infection. Reusable lenses, such as monthly or bi-weekly disposables, require cleaning and proper storage. Toric lenses are designed to correct astigmatism, while multifocal lenses address presbyopia.

Proper hygiene and care are crucial for contact lens wearers to prevent eye infections and other complications. This includes regular cleaning, disinfection, and following the prescribed wear schedule. Regular eye examinations by an eye care professional are essential to ensure the lenses fit correctly and to monitor eye health.
