Silikastasekä, often referred to as silica dust, is a fine particulate matter composed of silicon dioxide. In its crystalline form, silicon dioxide is a common mineral found in quartz, sand, and granite. When these materials are disturbed, such as during construction, mining, or manufacturing processes, tiny airborne particles can be released. These particles are so small they can be inhaled deep into the lungs.

Prolonged or intense exposure to crystalline silica dust can lead to serious respiratory diseases. The most well-known of these is silicosis, a progressive and irreversible lung disease that causes scarring of lung tissue, leading to shortness of breath, chronic cough, and fatigue. In severe cases, silicosis can be fatal. Additionally, exposure to silica dust is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, tuberculosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Occupational health regulations in many countries mandate measures to control silica dust exposure in workplaces. These typically include engineering controls like ventilation systems and wet methods to suppress dust, administrative controls such as limiting exposure time, and the use of personal protective equipment, most notably respiratory protection. Awareness and prevention are key to mitigating the health risks associated with silikastasekä.
