Sileälihaskudos, also known as non-striated muscle tissue, is one of the three types of muscle tissue in the human body, along with skeletal and cardiac muscle. It is found in the walls of hollow organs, such as the digestive tract, uterus, blood vessels, and bladder. Unlike skeletal muscle, which is under voluntary control, smooth muscle is involuntary, meaning its contractions are not consciously directed.

The cells of smooth muscle tissue are spindle-shaped and uninucleated, meaning they have a single nucleus. These cells are arranged in sheets or layers and are connected by gap junctions, which allow for coordinated contractions. The contraction of smooth muscle is slower and more sustained than that of skeletal muscle. This property is important for functions like maintaining blood pressure and propelling food through the digestive system.

Smooth muscle plays a crucial role in numerous physiological processes. In the blood vessels, its contraction and relaxation regulate blood flow and blood pressure. In the digestive system, it facilitates peristalsis, the wave-like contractions that move food along the tract. In the respiratory system, it controls the diameter of the airways. The uterus uses smooth muscle contractions for childbirth.

The regulation of smooth muscle contraction involves both nervous and hormonal signals. The autonomic nervous system innervates smooth muscle, releasing neurotransmitters that can either stimulate or inhibit contractions. Hormones, such as adrenaline and oxytocin, also influence smooth muscle activity. The ability of smooth muscle to contract and relax without fatigue is essential for the continuous functioning of many vital organs.
