They interact with locative cases of the noun, for example forms corresponding to inessive, adessive, illative, or other locative meanings. This means that the meaning of a sijaintisana often depends on the accompanying noun’s case ending or on the specific sijaintisana itself.

Common examples of sijaintisanat include words like sisällä (inside), ulkona (outside), päällä (on top of), alla (under), edessä (in front of), takana (behind), vieressä (beside), lähellä (near), kaukana (far), and välissä (between). For instance, Kirja on pöydällä means “The book is on the table,” with pöydällä illustrating location on a surface. Taulu on seinällä conveys painting-on-the-wall, and Ovi on ikkunoiden välissä means “The door is between the windows.”
