Siirtokuvia is a Finnish term describing images that are transferred from one surface to another through a process that preserves the original design while changing its carrier. The concept encompasses several techniques, including ceramic or porcelain decal transfers (water-slide decals) and heat-transfer methods used on textiles and other substrates. Historically, transfer printing has roots in ceramic decoration and printmaking, where an image is applied to a surface via an intermediary film or paper.

Techniques and materials: Water-slide decals involve printing an image on a special film, soaking it to release the image, and sliding it onto a prepared surface where it adheres and is then sealed with a clear coat. For textiles and other materials, transfer papers or films are used; the image is printed onto the transfer medium and activated by heat or moisture to bond with the substrate. Modern digital methods include adhesive vinyls and sheets designed for heat pressing that yield durable images.

Applications: Siirtokuvia are used in ceramics and glass decoration, model making, signage, and textile art, as well as various crafts. They allow precise, repeatable imagery and can be more efficient than freehand painting, provided surfaces are properly prepared and finishes are correctly applied.
