It is typically a pivoted or telescopic metal arm, attached to the vehicle's frame or engine, which allows the vehicle to be rested on one side, usually at the center. The sidestand is designed to take the weight of the vehicle, as well as the rider's safety in case of a fall or if one needs to get on or off the vehicle.

In standard designs, a sidestand is raised by turning a handle or pressing a button on the handlebars or nearby controls. Once raised, the sidestand depresses into a socket or rests in a corresponding channel, creating a stable and level base. This allows the rider to get on and off the vehicle securely, as well as permitting maintenance or repairs.

Sidestands are commonly found on production motorcycles, although they are more likely to be seen on lightweight, sporting, and dual-sport models. They are typically made of durable steel, with various types of coating or finishes to prevent corrosion. Custom-made sidestands are sometimes used on higher-performance or specialty vehicles, allowing riders to make adjustments for optimal bike placement or by providing improved luggage capacity.
