The resolution of a sidescan sonar system depends on factors such as the frequency of the sonar and the depth of the water. Higher frequencies provide better resolution but have a shorter range.

Sidescan sonar is widely used in various applications, including marine archaeology for locating shipwrecks and submerged artifacts, seabed mapping for navigation and resource management, and environmental surveys to monitor changes in the seafloor. It can also be used for inspecting underwater structures and pipelines, and for detecting unexploded ordnance. The data collected by sidescan sonar can be processed and analyzed to create detailed maps and identify features of interest on the seafloor.
