Sideplate is a term used in several contexts, most commonly in armor, protective equipment, and dining ware. It refers to a plate that covers the side of the body or a small plate used at the dining table. The term can therefore denote both protective components and a kitchen or tableware item, depending on the context.

In historical armor, sideplates were additional protective plates attached to the sides of a breastplate or cuirass. They protected the wearer’s ribs and flank and came in various shapes, from rounded to oblong. Sideplates could be hinged or riveted to allow some movement, and their attachment often depended on the design of the overall harness and the wearer’s mobility.

In modern personal protective equipment, side plates are ballistic plates inserted into plate carriers to guard the sides of the torso. They are commonly sized at 6x6 inches or 6x8 inches and can be made from materials such as ceramic, high-strength polyethylene, or composite laminates. Side plates are rated under standards such as those set by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), with protection levels typically corresponding to II through IV for hard plates. They are used in conjunction with front and back plates to extend protection while balancing weight and mobility.

In dining, a side plate refers to a small plate placed to the left of the main plate for bread, salads, or other side dishes. Typical diameters range from about 6 to 8 inches and the plate is usually made from ceramic, porcelain, or glass. In casual dining settings, the side plate may be omitted.
