Shore protection refers to measures taken to prevent or reduce the erosion and inundation of coastlines by natural forces, primarily wave action and rising sea levels. These efforts are crucial for safeguarding coastal communities, infrastructure, and natural habitats. Methods of shore protection can be broadly categorized into hard engineering and soft engineering.

Hard engineering solutions involve the construction of rigid structures designed to withstand the force of the sea. Examples include seawalls, breakwaters, revetments, and groynes. Seawalls are vertical or sloping barriers built along the shore to absorb or deflect wave energy. Breakwaters are structures built offshore, parallel or perpendicular to the coast, to create sheltered areas and reduce wave impact. Revetments are sloped structures, often made of rock or concrete, designed to absorb wave energy and protect the underlying land. Groynes are structures built perpendicular to the shore, extending into the sea, to trap sand and widen beaches.

Soft engineering solutions, in contrast, work with natural processes rather than against them. Beach nourishment, the process of adding sand to an eroded beach, is a common soft engineering technique. Dune restoration and creation also play a vital role, as sand dunes act as natural buffers against storm surges and erosion. Vegetation planting, such as with salt-tolerant grasses, can help stabilize sand and reduce wind erosion. Managed retreat, a more controversial approach, involves strategically relocating infrastructure and communities away from vulnerable coastlines. The choice of shore protection method depends on factors like the specific coastal environment, the severity of erosion, economic considerations, and environmental impact.
