Shorelinesmay is a conceptual framework and data initiative designed to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of coastlines. Envisioned as an open, interdisciplinary resource, shorelinesmay aggregates shoreline position data from diverse sources to support research into coastal erosion, accretion, and land–sea interaction. The name signals a focus on variability and potential futures for shorelines, rather than a single static boundary.

Data are drawn from satellite-derived shoreline delineations, aerial and drone imagery, LiDAR, and tide gauge and bathymetric records. Shoreline positions are standardized using a consistent reference line and temporal sampling, with automated change-detection methods used to estimate movement between epochs. Quality control procedures address geometric misalignment, sensor differences, and seasonal effects.

Shorelinesmay provides visualization tools, a searchable archive of shoreline histories, downloadable geospatial datasets, and an application programming interface for researchers and planners. The project supports coastal risk assessment, adaptation planning, and academic study by enabling cross-region comparisons and long-duration trend analyses.

While offering broad potential, shorelinesmay faces challenges including data gaps in data-poor regions, inconsistencies in historical records, and the need for clear shoreline definitions. Ongoing work focuses on harmonizing measurement protocols, documenting uncertainty, and encouraging transparent data licensing and collaboration across institutions.
