Sheetmaking refers to the process of manufacturing thin, flat materials, most commonly paper, but also encompassing plastics, metals, and other substances. The fundamental principle involves forming a uniform layer of the chosen material and then processing it to achieve the desired thickness, strength, and surface properties.

In paper production, the most common method is the Fourdrinier machine. This involves suspending pulp, a mixture of cellulose fibers and water, on a moving screen. Gravity and suction drain the water, causing the fibers to interlock and form a wet sheet. This sheet then passes through a series of rollers for pressing and drying, followed by calendering to smooth the surface.

For plastic sheets, extrusion is a primary method. Molten plastic is forced through a flat die, creating a continuous sheet that is then cooled and rolled. Other methods include calendering, where plastic is passed between heated rollers, and casting, where a liquid plastic is poured onto a moving belt.

Metal sheets, such as those used for construction or manufacturing, are typically produced through rolling. Large metal ingots are passed repeatedly through powerful rollers, gradually reducing their thickness to the desired sheet form. Annealing processes may be used between rolling stages to soften the metal and prevent cracking.

The specific techniques and machinery employed in sheetmaking vary greatly depending on the material and the intended application, but the core objective remains consistent: to produce a thin, flat, and usable material.
