Shakkisääntöjä, or chess rules, govern the game of chess, a strategy board game played between two players. The game is played on a square board of 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means to threaten the king with an attack in such a way that the king cannot escape.

Each piece moves in a specific way. The king moves one square in any direction. The queen moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The rook moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically. The bishop moves any number of squares diagonally. The knight moves in an 'L' shape: two squares in one direction (horizontal or vertical) and then one square perpendicular to that direction. Pawns move forward one square, but their first move can be two squares. Pawns capture diagonally one square forward.

There are special moves in chess. Castling is a move involving the king and one of the rooks. En passant is a special pawn capture. Pawn promotion occurs when a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board and can be exchanged for any other piece except a king.

A game can end in several ways besides checkmate. Stalemate is a situation where a player whose turn it is to move is not in check but has no legal moves; this results in a draw. A draw can also occur by agreement between players, if the same position repeats three times, or if 50 moves have been played without a pawn move or a capture.
