The sphenoid sinuses, known in Swedish as sfenoidabihålorna, are a pair of air-filled cavities located within the sphenoid bone of the skull. This bone is centrally positioned at the base of the skull, behind the ethmoid sinuses and nasal cavity. The sphenoid sinuses are the deepest of the paranasal sinuses and are of irregular shape and size, with significant variation between individuals. They are lined with mucous membrane and are continuous with the nasal cavity, allowing for drainage of mucus.

These sinuses are important for several reasons. Anatomically, their proximity to critical structures such as the optic nerves, pituitary gland, and internal carotid arteries makes them significant in both surgical and pathological contexts. Inflammation of the sphenoid sinuses, known as sphenoid sinusitis, can lead to a variety of symptoms, including headache, facial pain, and visual disturbances, due to their deep location and the potential for pressure on surrounding nerves and vessels. Diagnosis often involves imaging techniques like CT scans. Treatment typically involves antibiotics for bacterial infections, and in some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to drain the sinuses or address complications. The development and function of the sphenoid sinuses continue into adulthood.
