Servetje is a small piece of fabric or paper used at meals to wipe the mouth and hands, protect clothing, and keep the table clean. In Dutch-speaking contexts it denotes the item placed at the dining setting, with disposable paper servetjes common in casual dining and linen or cotton servetten used in more formal settings. The term is the diminutive form of servet, derived from the French serviette, meaning a small towel or napkin.

Materials and varieties vary. Paper servetjes are inexpensive, single-use, and come in a range of thicknesses and finishes, often white or printed. Linen and cotton servetten are reusable, durable, and can be washed; they are typically plain white or patterned and used to convey a more formal or durable impression. Sizes differ, but linen napkins are commonly around 40x40 cm when unfolded, while paper napkins are smaller and folded for convenience.

Etiquette and use are standard aspects of dining culture. After seating, the servetje is unfolded and placed on the lap. It is used to dab the mouth from outside to inside and to wipe the fingers as needed, with a general guideline to avoid using it as a towel for the face. In formal settings, it may be placed to the left of the plate or on the plate, and if leaving the table briefly, the napkin is placed on the chair or in the seat.

Environmental considerations have grown in importance. Disposable servetjes are often made from recycled materials, while linen servetten are favored for sustainability, with proper care through regular washing to extend their life.
