A sentralstøvsuger, also known as a central vacuum system, is a built-in cleaning appliance installed in a building. The system consists of a central power unit, typically located in a basement, garage, or utility room, connected to a network of pipes embedded within the walls. These pipes run to inlet valves located in various rooms throughout the building. When cleaning, a flexible hose is plugged into one of these inlet valves, activating the central unit. Dust and debris are then sucked through the pipes and collected in a large receptacle at the power unit.

The primary advantages of a central vacuum system include improved indoor air quality, as fine dust particles are expelled outside the living space, unlike portable vacuums that can recirculate them. They are also generally quieter than traditional vacuums and offer more powerful suction. The absence of a bulky portable unit makes cleaning more convenient, with only the hose and attachments needing to be managed. Maintenance typically involves emptying the collection bin periodically and occasionally cleaning or replacing filters. Installation is usually done during the construction of a new building or as a significant renovation project.
