Selvutjevnende is the Norwegian term for self-leveling, referring to a class of flowable floor underlayments used to produce a flat, smooth surface with minimal manual troweling. These materials are designed to spread under gravity, filling low spots and smoothing out minor irregularities in the substrate.

Most selvutjevnende products are cementitious, combining a binder, fine aggregates, water, and plasticizers. Some variants are gypsum-based for interior use, while epoxy- or polyurethane-based formulations are available for higher durability or chemical resistance. They may include added polymers to improve bonding, flexibility, or drying characteristics.

Common applications include leveling concrete slabs, cement screeds, and other structurally sound subfloors before installing final coverings such as ceramic tile, vinyl, laminate, or wood. Substrates should be clean, dry, crack-free, and properly prepared; priming is typically required, and moisture barriers may be necessary on damp concrete.

Application generally involves mixing the product with water or using a pre-measured package, then pouring and spreading it to the desired thickness. The material flows and seeks a level surface, and curing times vary by product and conditions. Final floor coverings are installed after the underlayment has reached sufficient strength.

Advantages include faster installation, the ability to create ultra-flat surfaces over uneven substrates, and reduced need for mechanical leveling. Limitations involve reliance on a stable substrate, potential cracking with substrate movement, moisture considerations, and thickness constraints. Product selections range from cementitious to gypsum-based and from basic leveling compounds to advanced epoxy or PU systems.
