Seljaajuõõt refers to the central canal of the spinal cord. This narrow, fluid-filled passageway runs the length of the spinal cord, from the brainstem down to the filum terminale. The canal is a continuation of the ventricular system of the brain, specifically the fourth ventricle. It is lined with ependymal cells, which are a type of glial cell.

Within the seljaajuõõt flows cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid serves multiple crucial functions. It provides mechanical support and cushioning to the spinal cord, protecting it from shock and injury. CSF also plays a role in nutrient and waste transport, delivering essential substances to the spinal cord's cells and removing metabolic byproducts. Furthermore, it helps maintain a stable chemical environment for neural tissue.

The development of the seljaajuõõt is closely linked to the embryonic development of the neural tube, the precursor to the central nervous system. Defects in the formation or closure of the neural tube can lead to abnormalities in the seljaajuõõt, such as syringomyelia, a condition where fluid-filled cavities form within the spinal cord. These cavities can expand and damage surrounding neural tissue, leading to a range of neurological symptoms. While the seljaajuõõt is a vital structure for spinal cord health, its narrowness means it has limited capacity to accommodate changes in CSF flow or pressure.
