Seligpreisung is a German term for the Church's official declaration of a person as "Blessed" (bezeichnete Bezeichnung). It is one step in the process of canonization, the recognition of a martyr or a saint in the Catholic Church. The word combines selig (blessed) and preisung (utterance or proclamation), reflecting both the spiritual state of the individual and the formal act of proclamation by the Church authorities.

The act of Seligpreisung typically follows a rigorous investigation of the candidate's life, virtues, and the verification of a miracle attributed to their intercession. The investigation is conducted by a diocesan tribunal, under the auspices of the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints. After the local inquiry, a postulator compiles a dossier (Documenta causae) and presents it to the congregation. If the cause is approved, the Pope grants the decree of heroic virtue, after which the candidate can be titled “Venerable.” Following the confirmation of a miracle, the Pope may issue a decree of beatification. The ceremony is realized in a public Mass led by a papal delegate and involves the laying of a golden statue or plaque, as well as a blessing of the faithful with the posthumous title “Blessed” (Beati in Latin).

Seligpreisung is distinct from sainthood; canonization requires a second miracle after beatification. While many beatified persons serve as patrons and models of Christian virtue, they are not afforded the universal cultus reserved for canonized saints. The practice dates back to the early medieval Church but was formalized in 1588 by Pope Sixtus V. Notable examples include Martin de Porres (Blessed, 1921), the first canonized Afro‑American and the first Dominican friar with a Latin surname, and Faustina Kowalska (Blessed, 1938), whose prayer of the Divine Mercy found wide devotion. The beatification process is thus a key component of Catholic canon law and devotional life, bridging local veneration and universal recognition by the Church.
