Sedimenttivirrat, known scientifically as turbidity currents, are underwater avalanches of sediment-laden water. They occur in oceans, lakes, and rivers, often triggered by events like earthquakes, storms, or the slumping of a river delta. When a large volume of sediment is disturbed, it mixes with water to form a dense, heavy fluid. This dense fluid then flows downslope under the force of gravity, much like an avalanche on land.

These currents can travel at high speeds, sometimes reaching tens of kilometers per hour, and can carry enormous amounts of sediment, including sand, silt, and clay.
