sedertre

Sedertre is the Norwegian name for cedar trees, evergreen conifers in the genus Cedrus, family Pinaceae. The group includes three widely recognized species: Cedrus libani (Lebanon cedar), Cedrus atlantica (Atlas cedar), and Cedrus deodara (deodar cedar).

Description: Sedertre are large trees with broad, sometimes irregular crowns. They have needles arranged in dense clusters on short shoots; needles are 12–25 mm long, stiff, dark green or blue-green, with a resinous scent. Cones are barrel-shaped, 7–12 cm long, borne upright on the branches; they mature after about 18 months and disintegrate on the tree to release seeds.

Distribution and habitat: Native to the western Himalayas (deodara), the Atlas Mountains of North Africa (atlas cedar), and the eastern Mediterranean region (Lebanon cedar). They prefer well-drained soil, full sun, and cool summers; young trees require regular moisture, while mature trees tolerate some drought. They are cultivated worldwide as ornamental trees in temperate regions.

Uses and cultural significance: Cedar wood is valued for durability, aroma, and resistance to decay; historically used in construction, ship timbers, and furniture. Cedarwood oil and scent are used in perfumery and insect-repellent products, especially in closets and chests to deter moths. The cedar of Lebanon is a symbol of Lebanon and features in regional culture and history.
