Secretionexcretion is a concept used to describe the relationship between secretion and excretion in biology. Secretion refers to the production and release of substances by cells or glands for use within the organism or for external transport, often through ducts or secretory vesicles. Excretion refers to the elimination of metabolic wastes and other substances the organism does not need, typically via specialized excretory organs. The term is not a formal scientific designation in all fields, but it is sometimes used to discuss how secretory and excretory pathways interact within tissues and across organ systems.

Cellular mechanisms of secretion involve the secretory pathway: synthesis in the endoplasmic reticulum, processing and packaging in the Golgi apparatus, loading into vesicles, and release by exocytosis. Secreted products can be enzymes, hormones, mucous, neurotransmitters, or other functional compounds intended for a target site or for transport in body fluids. Excretion mechanisms include filtration and secretion by kidneys (forming urine), excretion of wastes into the digestive tract, and removal of gases such as carbon dioxide via the lungs. Other routes include excretion through the skin and, in invertebrates, through specialized structures like Malpighian tubules. Plants also participate in secretionexcretion, producing nectar, oils, resins, and waxes, while removing excess water or waste through stomata, hydathodes, or specialized secretory tissues.

Overlap and significance: Secretion and excretion are closely linked in maintaining homeostasis, nutrient processing, and defense. Secreted products may be waste products destined for excretion, and excretory processes can influence the composition and quantity of secretions. Disruptions in either pathway can lead to disease or dysfunction, illustrating the interconnected nature of these fundamental biological processes.
