Sebességtartás, often translated as cruise control, is a driver assistance system that automatically maintains a set speed selected by the driver. It is designed to reduce the driver's workload on long journeys and can contribute to improved fuel efficiency. The system typically works by electronically controlling the throttle.

When cruise control is activated, the driver sets a desired speed. The system then monitors the vehicle's speed and makes adjustments to the engine's power output to keep it at that set speed, even when going uphill or downhill. On inclines, the engine will increase power, and on declines, it may reduce power or even apply light braking in some advanced systems.

Modern vehicles often feature adaptive cruise control (ACC), which is an evolution of the basic system. ACC not only maintains a set speed but also adjusts that speed to maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead. It uses sensors, such as radar or cameras, to detect other vehicles and can automatically slow down, stop, and then resume the set speed as traffic conditions change. This further enhances driver comfort and safety.

Sebességtartás is primarily intended for use on highways and open roads where consistent speeds are possible. It is not a substitute for active driver control and should be used with caution, especially in adverse weather conditions, heavy traffic, or on winding roads. The driver must always remain attentive and ready to take manual control of the vehicle.
