seaadapted is a term used in biology to describe organisms, traits, or life histories suited to marine environments. It denotes the capacity to withstand or exploit the physical and chemical conditions of seawater, including salinity, pressure, waves, and temperature.

seaadapted organisms may possess physiological adaptations such as specialized osmoregulatory mechanisms, efficient gill or lung exchange, salt excretion, and efficient energy use. They often show morphological features like streamlined bodies, fins or appendages for swimming, swim bladders or buoyancy control, and protective surfaces to resist fouling and abrasion. Reproductive and developmental strategies may be adapted to pelagic or benthic life, including larvae that tolerate saline water and dispersal through currents.

Examples include many marine vertebrates (whales, sea turtles, fish), mollusks, crustaceans, corals, seaweeds, and seagrasses. Some species are strictly marine specialists, while others are euryhaline, capable of living in variable salinity or moving between freshwater and seawater. The term also covers microbial and algal taxa with adaptations to high salinity, pressure, or darkness in deep-sea environments.

In research, seaadaptation is studied to understand evolution, physiology, and ecosystem dynamics. It informs conservation and management by indicating a species’ vulnerability to climate change, pollution, and habitat loss. It is distinct from freshwater adaptation and terrestrial adaptation, though shared mechanisms like osmoregulation can be convergent across habitats.
