scilloides

Scilloides is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asparagaceae. The genus currently contains a single recognized species, Scilloides alba, commonly known as White Squill or False White Squill. This perennial herb is native to the Mediterranean region, found in countries like Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

The plant is characterized by its basal rosette of linear leaves and a slender flower stalk bearing clusters of small, star-shaped white flowers. These flowers typically appear in spring. Scilloides alba is often found growing in sandy or rocky soils, in open woodland or scrubland habitats. It is a relatively small plant, usually reaching a height of no more than 15-20 centimeters.

Historically, the genus Scilloides was considered to contain more species, but taxonomic revisions have reduced it to its current single species. The name "Scilloides" itself suggests a resemblance to plants in the genus Scilla, which are also related and share some superficial similarities. Due to its relatively widespread natural distribution and lack of significant threats, Scilloides alba is not currently considered endangered. Its horticultural appeal is moderate, appreciated for its delicate spring blooms in suitable climates.
